American Airlines Allows You to Book One Way Tickets

I just love this about AA in general. I don’t think they are the only airline who allows for this. I’m pretty sure United allows for open-jaw flights and others do, as well. Still, it’s just so easy with AA.

Example: Kevin and I went to visit our daughter who is attending grad school in Glasgow, Scotland, just before Christmas 2021. Remember when Omicron decided to overtake the world and all the countries were going crazy closing borders once again, requiring multiple Covid tests and proof of vaccination status? It was impossible to keep up with all the changes. That’s the brilliant time we decided to fly. In a months’ time our itinerary entirely changed 3 different times as we tried to figure which countries were feasible for us to enter.

Originally, Kevin and I were flying to Scotland, then to Prague and home from Vienna, Austria. Well, Vienna decided close to EVERYBODY for a month and that itinerary had to be scrapped. Next, we planned to enter Scotland via Glasgow, spend a few days in Paris and travel home from there. BUT there was talk that France had potential to completely close to the UK. SO…we also needed a way to get home if all we could do was stay in Scotland. I booked a one way flight home from Edinburgh just in case.

What helped Kevin and I manage the crazy? One way flights booked with frequent flyer miles and easy cancellation!

You Can Cancel Your Flights Booked With AA Miles All the Way Up To Departure Time and Get Fully Reimbursed of Your Points and $

Example: Kevin and I were easily reimbursed for our Vienna flights home prior to leaving the US with a few clicks on the AA online app. We had a one way ticket to Glasgow from Denver. Then we kept a one way ticket both from Glasgow AND from Paris that would get us home.

Because the world and all the rules were changing so quickly, we didn’t know until 24 hours prior to leaving if we would be able to get to Paris or not. Turns out, we got in just before they closed to the UK! I was able to cancel our flight from Glasgow to Denver and immediately got reimbursed. Then we were able to enjoy a few days in Paris before starting back home for Christmas. Frequent flyer points and easy cancellation up until departure saved the trip!

AA Miles are Great For Non European Destinations, Too

You can definitely enjoy your miles traveling domestically within the US or practically anywhere else in the world. A few weeks ago I booked a frequent flyer mileage round trip flight from Denver to Puerto Rico for 8 days as a much needed getaway for my husband. It only cost $11.60! Watch this space. If you have the miles, I’ll teach you how to use them!
