My Obsession with Frequent Flyer Miles

amycolon.substack.com

Frequent Flyer Miles are a tricky and underrated currency that, in my opinion, simply doesn’t get enough love. They are difficult little boogers to figure out. It’s true. But once you master the acquisition game and build your bank, the value of a savings account of Frequent Flyer Miles with your favorite airline is immeasurable.

When I was a mom of three littles, my husband and I dreamed of taking them to Vietnam. I kid you not, we scrimped and saved for seven long years to gather the $10,000 needed to purchase tickets and spend two weeks in Hanoi and the villages to the north. It was an amazing adventure! I wouldn’t trade it for the world. But who wants to wait seven years to go again? Not us.

Still, not knowing of any other options beyond robbing a bank, our little family started our next travel fund. This time we made a progress chart out of markers and poster board, hung it on the bedroom wall and started saving once again towards a family holiday to Europe. This trip, unfortunately, never happened as we dreamed. It turns out that raising a family is really expensive!

Fast forward. . .

It was four years ago. Our family had just completed an international adoption that took us six years to bring home our fourth daughter. We got home and I was spent. Six years of stress and hopeful anticipation had taken its toll on me. It was obvious how badly I needed to do something to care for myself. Isn’t it interesting how getting to the end of your rope can make you figure things out that you never thought possible? Out of sheer necessity I needed to find a way to go somewhere all by myself and catch my breath. My somewhere was Europe.

Enter the glorious discovery of Frequent Flyer Miles! Thanks to American Airlines and good ol’ fashioned determination, I figured out how to acquire enough miles in just two months to get me across the pond.

Miles and I have had a passionate love affair ever since.

So keep watching this space if you want to fall in love with Miles, too. There are plenty to go around.

Regularly, I’ll be cutting through the weeds for you and posting all the best bits and pieces you’ll want to know about how to start your very own Frequent Flyer Miles bank account and travel on a dime in no time. If you’ll join my newsletter today, you’ll be sure not to miss a single trick.

Welcome to my obsession.
