Moments of Curiosity
Answering questions and experiencing "travel" by being curious...plus an invitation just for you
What a good gift it is to be reminded to stay curious.
I am learning this more and more each day.
Yesterday was a really important Big Story Living work day. I’m creating a journal to accompany our upcoming journeys and needed to reach out for help. To my pleasure, I found myself cozy on the sofa with my dear friend, Cari, who has the beautiful knack of guiding and loving me simply by the way she enters in. Our conversations always disciple me towards how to remain curious.
If you’ve ever had a friend like this, you understand what I mean. I dream and share my joys, and Cari smiles with and affirms me. She holds space, listens deeply, sees me and validates my “not knowing” as okay. I ask what she thinks about something, and her opinions never rise to the top. Instead, Cari turns the conversation and asks me questions like, “why is it that you need the answer to that?” “What’s behind that question?”
Cari teaches me to be curious.
And sometimes it infuriates me because I just want somebody to give me the answers so my anxiety might lessen for the moment or so my brain might experience a momentary rest.
But I’m learning that there is a sweet and unusual gift in being presented not with the answers but with real questions which allow me to find my own answers. I’m also learning that the answers I’m asking for are not always the answers I actually seek.
In the spirit of curiosity, I left Cari’s house ignited once again not only towards the discipline of curiosity in my daily life, but also towards the curiosity that propels me through my travels.
It’s true that holiday journeys can’t happen all the time, but by staying curious, we can “holiday” pretty much anywhere, right in the middle of the ordinary.
There is this store that I have passed for years called The Polish Pottery Outlet. I spied it long before my first trip to Krakow and have always wanted to go inside. While in Poland with my daughter, Olivia, we were enamored by the beauty of the pottery shops on every corner, and recently I have found myself dreaming of returning to this beautiful country on my next adventure.
Today I left Cari’s house and decided to give in to my curiosity by spontaneously taking a few moments to “travel” back to Krakow.
Upon entering the store I was immediately overcome with beauty and memories of a journey once taken. I asked questions to the sales clerk and learned about the stamping process of these dishes and cups. I wandered and touched and admired the nuances of each stamped mug, as no two are alike.
Saying “yes” to my curiosity instead of driving by once again gifted me with a simple pleasure that propelled me through the rest of an ordinary day. It brought back beautiful travel memories and filled me with a few extraordinary moments that I am savoring even today as I sit here with my morning coffee and write.
Thanks, Cari.
Curious in 2023
Big Story Living Curated Journeys are all about curiosity. Together in the months leading up to our adventure we are curious to learn more ways to save big on our travel experiences that will allow us to travel again and again. Then each day in cities all over the world we explore for nine days with eyes wide open and agendas ready to be interrupted by the whims of our own curiosity. By checking in on what we need, how we feel, where our expectations are leading us and what lies just beyond the typical travelers daily agenda, we move intentionally and curiously with one eye on the world and the other eye on Jesus. The days are yours to create personally as you wish, and you will be surrounded by a small group of ladies to travel and lodge with, making new friends along the way.
